Like many desi kids, some of my fondest memories revolve around a soothing champi — or head massage — given by my mother, grandmother, and sometimes even my aunt. Whether it was a simple coconut oil massage or a more elaborate blend infused with flowers and herbs, it was a weekend ritual that was simply non-negotiable.

As I grew older, I realised that this cherished family tradition offered more than just comfort; it also brought remarkable benefits, from stress and blood pressure relief to improved hair health. Read on to discover the full range of head massage benefits and simple ways to enjoy a champi at home.

Why does a head massage matter for your hair and body health?

Dr Madhuri Agarwal, founder and medical director of Yavana Aesthetics Clinic, says, “Head massage has multiple benefits. A good head massage can help with lymphatic drainage and boost the blood circulation for the scalp." As the circulation gets better, nutrients start reaching the hair, improving hair health. However, the benefits of head massage are not limited to the quality and texture of the hair. "Head massage helps reduce stress and calm down the senses, thereby improving overall mental health and sense of well-being,” according to Dr Agarwal.

What are the benefits of a head massage?

We must remember that the benefits of head and scalp massage for hair growth depend on the type of massage one receives. However, some of the most common head massage benefits include:

  • Shinier, healthier-looking hair: The stimulating effect of a head massage on roots and blood vessels enhances circulation, which leads to an even distribution of natural oils.
  • Improved hair growth: Research shows that head massage helps increase hair growth. By increasing blood flow, more nutrients reach the hair follicles, increasing their thickness and growth.
  • Relieves tension and stress: Studies reveal that if done correctly, head massage can help reduce stress and enhance an overall feeling of calmness.
  • Eases headaches: According to a study, migraines and common headaches caused by stress can be controlled by focusing on the correct pressure points during a head or scalp massage.

While head massage has many benefits, Dr Agarwal cautions against overdoing it. "I donot advise intense dailyhead massages that use oil, as they can lead to hair breakage, scalp irritation, and an increase in oily scalp. A massage once or twice a week is adequate, and remember to do a gentle massage with fingertips instead of vigorously rubbing the scalp," she advises.

What are the ideal head massage steps?

There is nothing more relaxing than having someone give you a head massage. However, you will only sometimes have company or the time for a full-blown champi session. A head massage is also a great way to spend some time on self-care a few days every week. So here are some easy head massage steps:

  • Start by running your fingers through your hair: Place your fingertips on your forehead and glide them back through your hair. Remember to apply gentle to moderate pressure, focusing on the curves of your scalp. Repeat this around 10 times. Just make sure that your hair is detangled and down before starting.
  • Massage in circles: Use your thumbs at the base of your skull, rubbing in small circles for 45 to 60 seconds. Gently move up to your forehead before back down the neck. Repeat this four to five times.
  • Focus on the sides: Make small circles at your temples, moving over your ears to your neck. Alternate between circular motions and running your fingers through your hair for three to four minutes.
  • End behind the ears: Gently rub behind your ears with your thumbs and fingertips, moving down to your neck. This helps promote blood flow and calmness.
  • Things to be careful of: Avoid using heavy oils such as castor oil or vitamin E oil if you are prone to dandruff or acne. Make sure to wash off the oil completely — residue can lead to buildup and dandruff. Avoid heavily scented oils if you have allergies.

The benefits of head massage go far beyond nostalgia. From better hair health to relieving stress, head massage also helps enhance the overall sense of calm. So, make time to indulge in this age-old tradition for a healthy, happy you!
